About Bill Broyles

William (Bill) Broyles is a celebrated writer, editor, and storyteller whose work spans journalism, television, film, and personal memoir. He was the founding editor of Texas Monthly and later served as editor-in-chief of Newsweek in the 1980s. Bill is the author of Brothers In Arms, a deeply personal account of his return to Vietnam ten years after serving there as a Marine infantry lieutenant. He co-created the acclaimed television series China Beach and has penned numerous award-winning screenplays, including Cast Away, The Polar Express, Jarhead, Unfaithful, and Apollo 13, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. A native Texan, Bill graduated from Rice University and studied at Oxford. He has taught at the University of Texas at Austin and the U.S. Naval Academy. Today, he is immersed in spiritual and psychedelic exploration and is currently writing a memoir.
